Pay-Per-Click Advertising
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) or Sponsored Links refers to the idea of sites paying for targeted leads to come to their site. For instance, using the example above, if a company wanted to propel themselves to the top of the search engines for the keyword phrase “gift baskets” they would create a pay-per-click account on Google or Yahoo (there are many other smaller sites that offer PPC) and would set how much they are willing to pay for every click that comes to their site.
You can set daily and monthly budgets about how much you are willing to spend. The more you bid per click relative to your competition of the keyword, the higher you will appear in the results.
The sponsored links generally appear on the right side of the page under the heading “Sponsored Links”. You will also sometimes see these listings at the very top of the page (before the “organic” or optimized listings) under the title “Sponsored Links”.
